Who Runs the Cardinals

There is no box score to follow today, but there is a club taking shape behind the lines.

The St. Louis Cardinals will not be run by one man alone this season, no matter the title on the card. The structure on the field is layered, and it begins before the first pitch is ever thrown.

Rogers Hornsby remains the central authority. His name goes on the lineup, his hand sets the order, and his bat will carry more weight than any other in the league. But Hornsby does not spend his days building the club from scratch each morning. That work is already in motion when he steps onto the field.

The daily grind belongs to the coaches.

Bill “Shags” Shaughnessy handles the constant motion of the club. Drills move through him. Repetition, positioning, and correction are his trade. He keeps players working between instruction and execution, tightening the small things that decide innings before they begin. He is not loud about it, but his hand is on nearly every exercise run on the field.

In the outfield, Burt Shotton works his territory with precision. Routes are corrected, throws are measured, and positioning is adjusted until it holds. There is little wasted movement under Shotton. The expectation is clean play, not recovery.

On the field itself, leadership spreads.

Bob O'Farrell carries the pitchers. Signals, pace, and control of the game’s rhythm fall to him once the ball is live. A club that intends to compete cannot afford confusion at the plate, and O’Farrell is tasked with preventing it.

Across the diamond, Jim Bottomley provides steadiness. His role is less spoken but easily seen—holding the infield together, finishing plays, and keeping the line from breaking when pressure builds.

This is how the Cardinals will function.

Not as a single voice, but as a working system—Hornsby at the top, Shaughnessy in motion, Shotton shaping the field, O’Farrell directing the battery, Bottomley anchoring the line.

There is no game to record today.

But the way this club is run is already in place.
