With the corners secured and second base firmly under control, the Cardinals have turned their final infield question into their most important one.
Shortstop.
It is the last position unsettled.
And the one that must connect everything around it.

THE COMPETITION
Tommy Thevenow has emerged as the leading candidate through the latter part of camp.
His work has been steady—clean fielding, reliable throws, and a calm approach to the position. He does not attempt more than is required, and that restraint has worked in his favor.
He plays within the game.
And that is what the Cardinals need.
But the position has not been handed to him.

Specs Toporcer continues to push, bringing experience and familiarity with the club. His versatility remains a factor, though his path may ultimately lead to a broader utility role rather than a fixed position.
Andy High has also remained in the mix, showing the ability to handle multiple assignments, though like Toporcer, his greatest value may come in flexibility rather than specialization.
Jimmy Cooney continues to receive time, though his position appears further from the front than earlier in camp.

WHAT THE CARDINALS NEED
Shortstop is not simply another position.
It is the hinge of the infield.
It connects second to third.
It turns double plays.
It covers ground that others cannot.
And in this Cardinals system—guided by Hornsby’s defensive direction—it must function precisely.
The man who takes that role will not be asked to carry the offense.
He will be asked to prevent runs.
To make the play that must be made.
To keep the infield intact.

THE FINAL DAYS
With Opening Day approaching, the Cardinals are no longer exploring options.
They are narrowing them.
Thevenow has moved ahead.
But not beyond reach.
Each remaining game carries weight, and each play at shortstop is being watched with the understanding that it may decide the position.
—
THE COMPLETE INFIELD
By the time the Cardinals leave Texas, the infield will be set:
Bottomley at first.
Hornsby at second.
Bell at third.
And one man at shortstop.
That final piece will complete the structure the club has been building all spring.
And once it is in place, the Cardinals will no longer be preparing.
They will be ready.
