Pirates Strike Back St. Louis drops its first of the season as Pittsburgh answers in Game 2 with two big innings and championship control.

The St. Louis Cardinals took their first loss of the young season yesterday, falling 10–3 to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second game of the opening series at Sportsman’s Park.

This one turned on two innings—and the champions made both count.

The story began before the first pitch.

Jesse Haines was a late and surprising addition to the 25-man roster, brought off the disabled list and handed the start. It was not expected, but it was welcomed. Haines looked sharp early, working clean through the opening stretch and showing no hesitation on the mound.

For a time, he held.

The Pirates, however, are not a club that waits long to adjust.

Pittsburgh broke through with two big innings that shifted the game entirely. They did not scatter their offense—they grouped it. Hits came in sequence, pressure followed, and the Cardinals were forced onto the back foot. That is where the champions separate themselves. They do not miss when the inning opens.

Haines carried as far as he could.

Late in his outing, trouble returned—not from Pittsburgh alone, but from his hand. The finger that had kept him out forced the decision. He was pulled from the game after showing early command, unable to finish what he had started.

From there, the game moved away.

The Pirates continued to press, adding on and widening the margin. Their lineup worked through the order with discipline, and once ahead, they did not give it back. This is the same club that carried the league a year ago, and it showed.

St. Louis could not answer in kind.

The Cardinals managed their runs but never matched the pace of Pittsburgh’s big innings. Where the Pirates grouped their scoring, St. Louis scattered theirs, and the difference held on the board.

Final

Pittsburgh 10

St. Louis 3

There was movement off the field as well.

Haines’ return came at a cost. Jack Smith, the 30-year-old right-hander, was outright released to make room on the roster. It is a firm decision this early in the season, and one that ties directly to the club’s need for reliable arms.

Now, with Haines down again, the question returns just as quickly as it was answered.

The Cardinals will need to adjust, and the wire will carry that news first.

We’ll be listening.
