CUBS BEAT CARDINALS, 6 TO 5, AS REDBIRDS BOOT THREE


Hack Wilson’s Two-Run Wallop Turns Back St. Louis Rally — Blades Gets Four Hits — Root Lasts Distance Despite Ten Cardinal Safeties


The Cardinals slugged Charlie Root for 10 hits Thursday afternoon at Cubs Park, but three St. Louis errors cracked open the door often enough for Chicago to escape with a 6 to 5 victory before a crowd of 4,500.


The defeat dropped the Cardinals to 8 victories against 7 defeats while the Cubs climbed back to an even standing of 7 and 7.


Chicago and St. Louis each gathered 10 hits.


The difference rested in the fielding.


The Cubs committed 1 error.



The Cardinals made 3.


Charlie Root went the full nine innings for Chicago and captured his third victory of the season without defeat. The Chicago right-hander struck out 8 Cardinals and walked 1.


Duster Mails was charged with the defeat after yielding the deciding unearned run in the seventh inning.


Syl Johnson started for St. Louis and worked 4⅓ innings before leaving during the fifth inning trouble. Johnson allowed 6 hits and 4 earned runs while walking 3 men and striking out 1.


Herman Bell followed and held Chicago scoreless through 1⅔ innings while allowing only 1 hit.


Mails worked the seventh inning and Jesse Haines finished the final frame for St. Louis.


Chicago struck first when Les Mann Munson drove a Johnson pitch into the seats for a home run in the opening inning.


The Cubs added another tally in the second and carried a 2 to 0 lead before the Cardinals answered.


St. Louis broke through in the second inning.


Bob O’Farrell scored the Cardinals’ first run before Tommy Thevenow cracked a run-scoring double to cut the Chicago lead.


Thevenow finished with 1 hit in 3 trips and drove in 1 run.


The Cardinals continued to peck away at Root and cut into the lead again during the fifth inning.


Chicago answered sharply in the bottom half.


Hack Wilson smashed a two-run homer for the Cubs and drove in 3 runs during the afternoon. Wilson collected 2 hits in 3 official trips.


The Cardinals kept scrapping.



Jim Bottomley drove his third home run of the season off Root in the sixth inning and again pulled St. Louis back within striking distance.


Bottomley finished with 1 hit in 4 trips, scored once, and drove in 1 run.


St. Louis made its hardest drive in the seventh inning.


Ray Blades led the Cardinal attack with 4 hits in 5 times at bat and scored twice.


Heinie Mueller collected 2 hits, including a double, stole his fifth base of the season, scored once, and drove in another run.


Rogers Hornsby added a double and drove in 2 runs for St. Louis.


The Cardinals battled back even during the seventh inning rally, but the Cubs answered in their half after another St. Louis misplay prolonged the inning.


Chicago pushed across an unearned run against Mails which finally stood as the winning tally.


The Cardinals stranded 6 men on base.


Chicago left 9.


The Cardinals hit the ball hard enough to take the opener from Chicago.


Their glove work cost them the game.
