The Cardinals edged Chicago this afternoon in a tight, controlled contest that never drifted far from the pitcher’s grip. It was not a loud ballgame. It was a careful one—played in inches, decided late.

Chicago struck first in the opening inning. With two men down, Hack Wilson came through to bring home the game’s first tally, giving the Cubs a 1–0 edge before the Cardinals had settled.

St. Louis answered immediately in the bottom half. Ray Blades and Heinie Mueller worked their way aboard, and with pressure building, the Cardinals forced the issue. A sacrifice fly brought Blades home to even the count, though the inning left more on the table than it claimed.

The middle innings settled into a rhythm. Both clubs traded outs, neither side able to push through. The Cubs scratched across another run in the seventh—Gabby Hartnett delivering with a hit to right that plated Jimmy Cooney and tied the contest once more at 2–2. It was the kind of moment that shifts a ballpark’s mood without changing its volume.

Then came the eighth.

Heinie Mueller reached, and the Cardinals’ middle order followed. Rogers Hornsby kept the line moving, and Jim Bottomley stepped in with the inning leaning on his bat. Bill Sherdel carried the full distance for St. Louis, working nine innings and allowing just enough to keep the game within reach, but never beyond it. Tony Kaufmann matched him deep into the afternoon before yielding the run that proved the difference.

There were no wasted movements in this one. Every play carried weight. Every baserunner mattered.
